Waste and recycling collection

About containers we provide and what to do to store your waste correctly before collection.

Containers, bins and pre-paid sacks

We provide your business with containers, wheelie bins or pre-paid sacks to collect your recycling, food and general waste.

If you want to know the best option for you or need a specific container, call us on 020 7527 4900 or email CommercialWaste@islington.gov.uk, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

General business waste containers

The containers are available in 240, 360, 660 or 1100 litres capacity and are branded for collection by Islington Council.

The 660 and 1100 litre containers come with brake controls, are made from steel constructions with a watertight lid, and lockable with extra keys on request.

Recycling containers

Our mixed recycling collection costs less than a general business waste collection. We offer a variety of bin or container sizes.

Pre-paid sacks service for businesses with limited space

A pre-paid sack service is for businesses who do not have enough space for storing large containers. All sacks are Islington Council branded and the sacks are very durable and are roughly the same size as normal refuse sacks.

  • The charge includes delivery of sacks collection, contract administration, disposal costs and Duty of Care documentation.
  • Though there very few restrictions on how many pre-paid sacks you can use, please think of recycling and try to produce minimal waste.
  • We offer grey sacks for general waste and clear sacks for recyclable material. Grey and clear sacks are delivered monthly, quarterly, every six months, or once a year depending on your needs. If you require more grey or clear sacks you can purchase them at an additional cost.

Preparing your waste and recycling for collection

You can put all your recycling in together with no need for several different recycling bins on your premises. Check your collection times before leaving your waste for collection.

  • All business waste should be fully contained and tied in your commercial waste provider's sacks (not exceeding 6.5kg).
  • Waste must be contained within the bin with the lid closed, preventing waste from escaping.
  • All cardboard must be securely bundled and presented with your commercial waste provider's recycling labels (not exceeding 6.5kg).

Any waste placed out on the highway incorrectly is unauthorised and may lead to prosecution.

It is strictly forbidden for any unauthorised person to place waste in the rear of the waste provider's vehicle. Only trained authorised personnel should load vehicles. These operations are monitored by CCTV.
