What we collect and recycle

Find out what our business waste service can collect and recycle, including mixed recycling and food waste, to help save you money and improve your green credentials.

What we collect

As well as collecting general waste from your business we can also help with your:

  • recycling
  • food waste
  • confidential material
  • bulky waste
  • clinical waste.

Recycling

By using our recycling service, and separating recycling from your normal waste, you will make a big reduction to your waste collection costs while supporting your green and environmental credentials.

Our price for recycling is around 40% less than normal waste collection.

We can recycle:

  • paper and card/cardboard, food and drink cartons (including Tetra Pak)
  • glass bottles and jars
  • cans, tins, empty aerosol cans
  • plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays (rigid plastics – no lids)
  • plastic bags. 

Food waste

By recycling food waste, you can really reduce the environmental impact of your business. All food waste is composted or used for energy - none of it is wasted.

We can recycle:  

  • out of date food, removed from its packaging
  • tea bags and coffee grounds 
  • dairy products
  • fruit (including fruit stones) and vegetables
  • meat and fish (including bones)
  • bread, pastries, rice and pasta.

Confidential waste

We can collect and destroy the following in a safe and secure way.

  • Bank details
  • Medical records
  • Legal information.

Bulky waste

We can give you a quote to collect bulky waste items like office chairs, desks, WEEE goods and more.

Prices start at £50 for any bulky waste collection.

  1. Email CommercialWaste@islington.gov.uk with your request, a photo of the items and a list of what you would like us to collect.
  2. A sales officer will visit your business to check we can make a collection safely. If so we can give you a quote for the items.
  3. If you're happy with the quote, we'll make the collection after you've paid.

Clinical waste service

We offer a chargeable clinical waste collection service for businesses. This is an extra service and you must ask for, book and pay for this separately from your usual collections.

We supply yellow clinical waste sacks or sharps containers (boxes used for needles) which, when full, we can collect by appointment.

We can collect these categories of clinical waste:

  • Category A - soiled surgical dressings, swabs and other similar soiled waste
  • Category B - discarded syringe needles, broken glass and any other contaminated disposable sharp instruments or items
  • Category D - drugs or other pharmaceutical products
  • Category E - includes items used to dispose of urine, faeces and other bodily secretions or excretions.

We cannot collect category C clinical waste:

  • Category C - microbiological cultures and potentially infected waste from pathology departments or other clinical and research laboratories.
