Proposal summary
We’ve been working with Hackney Council on proposals to reduce road danger in the area while making it easier to walk, cycle, scoot, and use buggies and wheelchairs. The proposals also include changes that make the area more biodiverse, accessible, and attractive for all.
Over the past five years, we know that there have been a number of collisions at this junction including two serious collisions. Of those incidents recorded by the police, 17 people were injured, 10 of whom were cycling and four pedestrians; the others were passengers in a taxi or on powered two wheelers.
The proposals include:
- a parallel zebra crossing across Southgate Road, so that it’s easier and safer to cross the road
- a new cycle crossing on Northchurch Road, to support people walking, cycling, and wheeling
- new greenery, to boost biodiversity and improve air qualitywidening pavements, so that it’s easier to walk, and use buggies and wheelchairs in the area
- increased cycle parking
- a new loading bay for businesses to receive deliveries.
To help boost safety and make active travel easier, we’re also proposing a new traffic restriction which would prevent motor vehicles turning in and out of Northchurch Road. This would create more space to walk, cycle, wheel and use buggies and wheelchairs.
Motor vehicles would still be able to access all amenities as before, the only thing that might change is the route. Access to much of Northchurch Road and the northern section of Cleveland Road would be maintained, via Englefield Road or Oakley Road and Crowland Terrace.
