Easter service changes

During the Easter period, some of our services will be operating slightly different hours. Our council’s bin collection schedule will change for one week starting on Friday 29 March to make sure everyone’s waste is picked up around the bank holiday.

See the full schedule and your amended rubbish and recycling collection dates and other service changes including parking and library opening times over the Easter period.

Pay for short stay parking

Pay for short stay parking using your mobile phone or PayPoint shop.

There are almost 6,500 short stay parking bays in Islington that you can use and pay to park with your phone. Find out where they are on the interactive map.

Anyone can pay to park in these bays using the RingGo app or Paypoint shops. You will need your debit or credit card details and your vehicle registration number.

Blue Badge holders can park in short stay parking bays for an unlimited time.

Pay for your short stay by phone

Pay by phone parking is available at every short stay parking bay in Islington including Sobell Leisure Centre and Sonderburg car parks.

You will need:

  • the parking location number shown on the bay sign
  • to enter the amount of time you want to park for
  • to pay by phone by calling 020 7125 0039 or sign up for the RingGo service and use their smartphone app

Once registered, you can use your phone to add more minutes to your parking time without returning to your car. You can also agree to reminder text messages that let you know when your parking time is about to end.

You can also pay at Paypoint shops with cash. To find the nearest Paypoint shop, text ‘shop’ and the five-digit location number to 81025.

Restrictions and costs

The cost of parking in a short stay bay varies between £4.10 and £6.90. Use RingGo to check prices.

Short stay bays may be suspended for highways works, special events or other reasons. You must check the signs each time you park. Any vehicle parked in a suspended bay could get a parking ticket and may also be removed.

Peak time surcharge from 2 January 2024

From 2 January 2024, all short-stay parking at 10am to 1pm on Monday to Friday will include a maximum £1 surcharge. This is to try and reduce congestion during busy periods and encourage more sustainable travel.

The surcharge does not apply to controlled parking zones (CPZs) G, HE, TW, U and Z because they have limited day time controls.

Petrol surcharge on short stay parking

In line with the council’s net zero carbon aims, petrol and petrol hybrid vehicles will be subject to a surcharge on top of the standard tariff. The surcharge will vary with the CO2 emissions produced by your vehicle, the higher the emissions and higher the fuel surcharge.

Petrol fuel surcharge Surcharge per hour
1-185g/km CO2 £2.00
186-225g/km CO2 £2.50
Over 226g/km CO2 £3.75

Diesel surcharge on short stay parking

A diesel surcharge applies to all short-stay parking in Islington. This is to help reduce harmful emissions and improve air quality in Islington. Find out more about diesel surcharge.

  • Diesel surcharge: £7.05 per hour.

Electric vehicles in short stay parking bays

Electric vehicles (EVs) pay standard short-stay parking bay prices.

In line with our mission to make a greener, healthier Islington for all, we've ended the £2 concessionary parking rate for EVs and are encouraging a shift to more active travel methods such as walking, cycling and public transport. While the environmental damage from EVs is less than that of petrol and diesel vehicles, they still contribute to pollution during manufacturing.

Electric vehicles also contribute to road danger and take up road and parking space that could be used for other purposes, such as more greenery and new green spaces that people can enjoy and help improve their wellbeing.

Match day controls

Parking in a bay with additional match day controls costs £13.35 per hour plus any fuel surcharge.

You cannot use paper visitor vouchers during match day controls. Instead, use visitor e-vouchers at £4.25 per half hour plus any fuel surcharge. Discounted visitor e-vouchers for eligible residents are £2.12 per half hour plus any fuel surcharge.

Find out more about Emirates Stadium match day controls.

Motorcycle parking

Parking in dedicated motorcycle bays costs £1.07 per day.

Residents

Residents with a valid motorcycle permit do not need to pay this charge and can park in any motorcycle bay.

Non-residents

Non-residents can register for a non-resident motorcycle permit with RingGo. You can use this permit for any motorcycle bay.

Permit length Cost for petrol motorcycles Cost for electric motorcycles
One day £1.07 £0.53
One week £4.27 £2.13
One month £14.94 £7.47
Three months £37.35 £18.67
One year £117.37 £58.69

Signs show the pay by phone provider’s number and location code of the bay. The process is the same as our other short-stay parking spaces.
