Islington Dementia Strategy 2025 - 2035

Our Dementia Strategy for 2025-2035 sets out how residents are supported on the dementia journey; from prevention to diagnosis through to end of life.

Foreword

Councillor Flora Williamson, Executive Member for Health & Social Care and Councillor Janet Burgess M.B.E. Chair of Dementia Friendly Islington

We know that Dementia can have a life changing impact, not only on those living with the condition but also the people who care for them. Since 2017, Islington has been committed to and has worked towards becoming a dementia friendly borough. We want to make this a place where people affected by dementia are supported to live well and are valued as active participants in our community.

As Islington residents, we are proud that this borough boasts a wealth of statutory, community and voluntary services that support residents to reduce risk of dementia and to remain active and well after a diagnosis. We have excellent health and social care services that provide care and support from diagnosis to end of life. Dementia Friendly Islington is a growing network of organisations and residents who have a common goal of increasing awareness and creating a dementia inclusive community. However, the members of the Islington Borough Partnership, including the Council, the Integrated Care Board, Health providers and voluntary and community partners, recognise there is more we can do to prevent avoidable dementias and to improve the experience of people affected by dementia.

We are therefore delighted to introduce Islington’s first Dementia Strategy. The priorities and commitments made by the Council and its partners are rooted in the things that matter to Islington residents. They have been shaped by the people who live and work in Islington, including residents living with dementia, their carers and the people that support them.

The Islington Borough Partnership will work with residents to deliver on our commitments. We look forward to seeing this strategy come to life over the next ten years, as we take action together to reduce the impact dementia has on our community.

A message from the Islington Resident’s Dementia Reference Group

We in the Dementia Strategy Reference Group celebrate this strategy! We’re delighted that the community has spoken and the partners in this strategy have heard. They have built a foundation for the way forward together.

Our own journeys would have been helped if we had support around the five significant themes in this strategy. We appreciate that people affected by dementia will be supported and be better informed to make the right choices.

This is the beginning of creating a better world for people affected by dementia. We welcome members of the community to join us to continue making Islington a dementia friendly borough.
